And I have high hopes that commercial uses of space will become profitable beyond Earth orbit. Maybe the time has come.“  That quote’s from Andrew Cheng in an Associated Press article discussing the next step in the space race; asteroid mining.  Man, I remember when it was just enough to get to the moon, now we’re going mining too.  I wonder if Cohaagen will be more generous with the air than he was in the past.

I caught most of the Dave Rutherford show this post-election morning and to no surprise, he and the majority of his listeners (re: callers) were beside themselves with amazement that the Wildrose missed the mark by so much.  Of course even then, it’s more the case that the rest of the province are just idiots.  It’s expected though …surround yourself with like-minded and supportive views and the world becomes a much, much smaller place.  The Edmonton Sun must know of small places too, as they also went out on a limb by endorsing Danielle (who’s husband happens to be one of their executives).  But that unbiased-ness should be expected from a newspaper who’s readers still clamor for scantly clad girls to brighten up their day.  Yes I know, we have all sorts of culture in these here parts.

Speaking of culture, they had jazz playing in the gym tonight.  I know!  The speakers were quieter than normal though, which is probably a good thing as I don’t think jazz is the sort of stuff you want to work out to.  Of course I don’t mind it cause I’m one of those super ‘block everything out of your mind’ guys (I have my gigs to thanks me for this acquired skill) so it’s all background crap to me regardless of what it actually is.  ‘Gentle Rain‘ to blast your delts? …not bad.

Last but not least I got a parking ticket a few weeks ago.  It was for $52.50 with Diamond Parking Ltd.  How long was I parked you ask?  About 35 minutes.  I have no defense though …this parking lot used to belong to a grocery store (and it still does I assume) but a few years back you could just park there for a bit and then pick up something quick from the store so it looks like you were shopping.  No more though.  I missed the Pay Here signs too …I just assumed it was business as usual.  Anyway, I tried the ol’ “Cashing this check constitutes payment in full and releases all claims you may have related to this account.” along with an accompanying note saying that my 35 minutes was only worth $25 to them.  Turns out they too thought it was a nice compromise, so they cashed it without any ‘nullifying’ additions on the check.  Yea me :)  I don’t think the City of Edmonton would be as accommodating though.

stuff #13.6

This makes me happy (click).  I’ve been waiting for something of a facebook backlash for a while now.  Here’s hoping for an early Christmas present this year.

This makes me sad …”We’ve been blessed with natural resources…“  It’s a comment I overheard by a member of my parliament while on Rutherford’s 630 CHED radio program.  It seems he was upset with Obama’s recent decision to delay the XL pipeline.  From what I can gather, the boundaries that define Canada have been bestowed by some deity with abundant materials that we Canadians can exploit as we see fit.  Sweet, I love deities that play favorites …especially when they’re on my side.

This makes me relieved (click).  I don’t like pirates.  Water-logged or digital.  What I hate worse than pirates though are ‘artistic thieves’ – ones who steal creativity by limiting its growth.  Clay Shirky summed it up well in this recent Ted Talk: “The 20th Century was a great time to be a media company […] If you were making a TV show, it didn’t have to be better than the other TV shows of the day …it only had to be better than the two other shows that were on at the same time.

This makes me laugh (click).  It seems someone’s been playing the old iPad switch-a-roo, and a few consumers have gotten a bag of clay instead of the real McCoy.  It’s not all that funny if you got one I suppose, but what I’m excited about is for those with time on their hands to throw together some videos/skits with Apple ‘fanboys‘ actually trying to use the product.  Clay iPhones will be the next big seller if I know my trends.

Finally, this makes me wonder… “To admit that our ancestors are bacteria is humbling.  It has disturbing implications.  Besides impugning human sovereignty over the rest of nature, it challenges our assumptions of individuality, uniqueness, and independence.  It even violates our view of ourselves as discrete physical beings separate from the rest of nature and – still more unsettling – questions the alleged uniqueness of human intelligent consciousness.” pg 32.  Dazzle Gradually by Lynn Margulis and Dorion Sagan.

...just one of our many blessings.

canadian politics

3 12 2008

I hate politics.

Hate’s a strong word though, a better one might be uninterested. Mainly because typical politicians need to temper their statements to appease the different groups they represent, but in the end however, their language is dumbed-down, oversimplified and/or calculating disclosed/undisclosed to promote various agendas that are important to maintaining office. In a nut shell, they are rarely honest. But I accept the fact that what they have to say and what they don’t have to say is part of the job. It’s a living I guess …just not one that I envy.

If you’ve been following the circus sideshow that is Canadian Politics, then you’re only too well aware of the problems that people are almost up in arms about. Funny thing though, the ‘right’ are furious with Parti Québécoi’s Pauline Marois for a statement she made in the House of Commons. Something along the lines of …“We can clearly see that this country does not work. The only solution is to get out of it; to choose our sovereignty.” Interestingly enough, this is the exact same sentiment I heard from the concerned citizens calling in to the Dave Rutherford show the other morning.

Mr. Charles Adler also quoted something about “…if you allow the hatred of one group to consume you, you will behave irrationally.”

That about sums up the stupidity of the whole situation.
